Support the Iranian Student Movement!

Communist Students statement on the protests at Tehran University, by Ben Klein

On the 4th of Dec 2007, over 700 leftist students demonstrated in Tehran University with the slogans:

No to imperialist war, death to dictator!
The University is not an army garrison!
Hands Off the People of Iran!
No to criminal imperialist intervention!
Equality, Democracy, Boycott the elections! (reference to Islamic parliamentary elections in March 2008)

Over the last two days a total of 42 students have been arrested and the demonstrators called for the immediate release of these prisoners.

Students in 5 major universities (Tehran University, Bahomar University Shiraz, Ferdowssi University- Mashad and Mazandaran university) had used a single poster ‘Hands Off the People of Iran ‘ for their simultaneous protests.

In Tehran University, a message of solidarity by Communist students (an affiliate of HOPI ) was read out in Farsi :

To our brothers and sisters in Iran,
We wish to send our greetings of solidarity to your December 4 student demonstration. Your brave struggles and protests in the face of threats, intimidation and arrests are an inspiration to us all, and underline how it is you that are our natural allies in the struggle against imperialism, sanctions and war, not the Iranian theocracy. Unlike some on the British ‘left’ who deny the existence of movements like yours against imperialist war and against theocracy, we will continue to support your struggles and call for the release of incarcerated students and other political activists in Iran. We will continue to build links with your movements and look in the future to co-ordinate international actions and protests with you. We hope that your day of action is successful in getting your message across to the world in these increasingly unstable times. Rest assured that we will do our utmost in the fight against imperialism and provide our full support to your political demonstrations.
Yours against war and repression in Iran, and in the struggle for socialism,

Communist Students National Executive (an affiliate of the Hands Off The People Of Iran campaign)

  • Good to see you blogging, comrades. I’ve added you to my blogroll.

  • It may be an idea for presentation purpose to set the number of articles in one page at 5, otherwise it is very difficult to navigate all of the articles/postings on the blog.

  • Not that I agree with Communism … in fact it is a dead, discredited political/economic doctrine….but I digress…

Communists in Iran are marginal fringe groups in much the same way that Mosley’s BUF (British Fascists) in Britain was a fringe group. . . . .

There is much to be said about that comment especially since many Iranians – even today – support, still, Prime Minister Mossadegh who was overthrown in 53 by the CIA and MI:6. Mossadegh was a fierce opponent of socialism/communism especially in the back drop of the 1917 Russian Revolution….

  • To support Iranian movements is one thing, but to support it because they comport with your ideology is another….to me, that sounds self-serving….no?

  • We support all genuine movements for democracy whether they are led by communists or not. But beyond that of course we pay particular attention, and give special support, to fellow communists.

We also have no intention of saying that communists in Iran are anything bigger or stronger than they are, but if the Iranian state saw then as “marginal” and “fringe” then why do they throw so many of them in jail and torture them? And obviously this kind of repression plays some role in keeping them small for now. But that does not mean that Iranians will not, and are not now, fighting for freedoms and democracy. And people like the Freedom and Equality Seeking Students and Mansour Osanloo are playing a leading role in that and deserve our support.
