University of St Andrews students protest against the closure of Fife Park

This report is from this week’s Socialist Worker:

Students at the University of St Andrews protested on Friday of last week against the closure of Fife Park, one of the university’s two budget halls.

The protest highlighted the lack of affordable accommodation in the town.

The campaign is winning widespread support with over 1,000 students signing a petition against the closure.

The Lower Rents Now! campaign is pressurising the university’s authorities.

Rector Sir Simon Pepper OBE told the students at the protest, “Your views are being heard.”

Campaigners say that the university’s decision to demolish Fife Park will decrease social diversity at the university.

Although a replacement hall is planned, the university has announced it will cost more than double that of Fife Park – up from £52 to between £110-130 per week.
