Occupation at University of Manchester
Report by Alfred Stevens
Around 80 students occupied of a lecture theatre in the University of Manchester’s Roscoe building with around half staying overnight. The occupiers come from The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, workers form UCU and even some students from local colleges The occupation is in protest against cuts and any rise in tuition fees and in solidarity with all other occupations around the nation. The lecture has declared that it is set to last for an ‘indefinite’ time.
The occupiers have been busy organising a day school for Friday 26 November covering various topics. Japhy Wilson Marxist politics lecturer from the University of Manchester is set to speak tomorrow at about 1pm on the cuts. The second hour will be on what sort of education we want. Liberation campaigns will be the topic in the third hour and a lecture on the situation across Europe in the fourth hour.
Occupiers have been busy producing propaganda including flyers, posters and banners all evening to promote their cause and have also been regularly providing press releases. They have also been building for the next national day of walkouts on Tuesday 30 November and hope to attract more students from local schools and colleges who made the march last Wednesday the success it was.
Spirits are high with music from Billy Bragg and the Clash being blared over the lecture theatre speakers and there is talk of the Ashes being screened tonight on the projector.
Updates will come as and when developments occur. For now express solidarity with the occupiers by joining their group on facebook called “Roscoe Occupation” where you can send your messages of support.
