Lieberman greeted by protests
Israel’s far-right Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, came to the British Foreign Office on Whitehall today to meet his counterpart, the British Foreign Secretary, David Miliband and the Shadow Foreign Secretary, William Hague, as part of his bid to strengthen ties between Europe and Israel. Members of Communist Students joined the Stop the War Coalition protest on the opposite side of Whitehall to ‘greet’ this advocate of the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.
Around 50 people attended this protest which was called at short notice for a weekday morning. As well as the STWC, the protest was backed by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Jews for Justice for Palestinians, British Muslim Initiative, CND, Palestinian Forum in Britain. Jeremy Corbyn MP was also in attendance. Apart from comrades from Communist Students and the CPGB the only other left groups visibly represented were the Jewish Socialist Group and the avowedly Stalinist CPGB-ML. Dissident SWP members Lindsey German and Chris Nineham were present, as were at least a couple of other SWPers, but none of them were selling Socialist Worker or distributing any other SWP materials. Our comrades gave out a number of Hands Off the People of Iran leaflets arguing against sanctions and sold some copies of the Weekly Worker.
