28th April: Occupations and Demonstration

Today a demonstration was held to demand moratoriums in the subjects that will be affected by the Bologna Process in the next academic year. In preparation, students held a series of occupations in the city.

Occupations took place in the headquarters of Banco Santander (Europe’s largest bank), the headquarters of ERC and PSC (Catalan Republican Left and Catalan Socialist Party, ruling parties in Catalonia) and the University Commission. The universities joined forces with college students, unemployed people and transport workers to carry out the actions.

The purposes of the occupations were to make direct actions on those responsible for the privatisation of the Spanish higher education system and show solidarity with everyone who is being exploited and ripped off by the government’s new “bail-out” package for the banks.

The demonstration started at 6pm and the occupiers came together to march to the University Commission, where students were still inside (having chained themselves to the inside of the building). Upon arriving, the crowd called on the occupying students who untied themselves and left, to be greeted by cheers. A communiqué was read denouncing the privatisation process.
