Solidarity with students in Iran

Another Worker’s Liberty front is born: unwilling (or unable) to fight for their own politics within Stop the War and HOPI, the AWL have to set up their own solidarity group.

School of Oriental and African Studies (Euston, Russell Square or Goodge Street tube), Thornaugh Street, London

We are calling a meeting in London on 26 July to discuss campaigning in solidarity with student activists in Iran.

Since the late 1990s, Iranian students have repeatedly challenged their country’s brutal theocratic regime, and suffered major repression. Meanwhile, they face the threat of a military attack on Iran by the US, a threat which Iran’s rulers have used to strengthen their control of society.

Since 2006, increasing numbers of student activists have turned towards the workers’ movement and socialist ideas, creating organisations such as Freedom and Equality Seeking Students which are opposed to both US imperialism and the Iranian regime.

We want to help the Iranian comrades in their fight for democracy and socialism by:

– Mobilising solidarity with Iranian activists facing repression, including Farhad Hajmirzaee, who is still in prison in Iran, and Davood Bagheri, imprisoned in Turkey;
– Fundraising in support of the Iranian student movement;
– Making direct links between student activists and organisations in Iran and in Britain;
– Raising awareness in the British student movement of Iran’s growing left opposition of students, workers, women and national minorities.
– Opposing military intervention and economic sanctions against Iran.

If you support these goals, please raise the issue in your organisation and come along on 26 July.

Sponsors of meeting include

Sofie Buckland, NUS National Executive; Kave Heydari, Iranian student activist in London; Steven Monaghan, Hands Off the People of Iran steering member (pc); Katherine McMahon, Edinburgh Uni Solidarity Iran group chair; Aled Dilwyn Fisher, LSESU general secretary-elect and Young Greens; David Broder, Middle East Workers’ Solidarity; Education Not for Sale
